Prisons Now Selling Electronic Cigarettes To Inmates
With the rise in eCigs both in popularity and alternative to smoking regular cigarettes it was only a matter of time before the jails began seeing the benefit. With the devices popping up in over a dozen states such as Ohio, Illinois, South Carolina and even Texas, these smokeless devices are proving to be a very beneficial alternative to the unhealthy habit of smoking traditional cigarettes.
Jail officials say the benefits far outweigh any potential problems or health risks as they say they calm agitated inmates, decrease traditional cigarette contraband and have even brought in more revenue for the jails. Considering most jails are actually banning tobacco burning cigarettes, the inmates who smoke are going thru nicotine withdrawal and are becoming agitated and short tempered. "We've seen big improvement in behavior, with less arguments and fights" said James Frye, chief deputy of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in Sidney of eastern Ohio.
The main goal of this was to cut down on people sneaking in cigarettes and loose tobacco says Maj. Mitch Stanley whom is the center director.
Cigarettes have been banned by most prisons, because the cigarettes are used in the place of money and not to mention them being bad for their health. It is hard to replace cigarettes as payment or barter in prisons. I mean, what exactly are you doing in prison? reading books, physical training, drugs and fights. It's unrealistic to think that prisoners would be exchanging books to each other "in a perfect world yes but thats not the case", so they probably are going to trade with narcotics and cigarettes as they always have, it is safer than cigarettes we all know that.
